The paper develops the basic programming expertise gained in COMPX101, and applies these skills to creating visual outputs for creative industries including design and the arts. The paper is practically oriented, with problem-solving studio sessions and practical assignment work providing the student with opportunities to apply newly-learned skills and techniques. Object-oriented software principles (including encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism) will be taught, along with principles for the application of code to visual design problems.

The objectives of this paper are:

  • to empower students to use code as part of their creative practice
  • to enhance students' software development skills, particularly with respect to object-oriented software design and implementation

There is one lecture a week. Lectures will present the background, theoretical material, and general information for the paper. There are two studio sessions scheduled for each week; the purpose of the studio material is to reinforce material covered in lectures and help link that knowledge with the assignments of the paper. Studio critiques are considered an important part of the creative process, and provide an opportunity to discuss problems and answer questions in a small group setting. The studios also provide a space to carry out practical work and receive technical assistance in problem solving. In addition to the scheduled teaching, students are expected to work on studio work and assignments in their own time in order to obtain passing grades.

During studio sessions students will work on the studio exercises given and demonstrators will be present to provide support and mark off the exercises. Critiques will occur in the first hour of one of the studios, for both streams. Students must attend at least half (5) of the (10) critiques for the paper in order to pass; this is a compulsory requirement. Students will need to sign up for two (2) studios per week on Moodle in the first week of the paper. Students are expected to have watched the relevant tutorial videos before attending their studio sessions. Demonstrators will check studio exercise completion during the studio sessions, and will also be available to assist with troubleshooting the assignments. For students in Tauranga, online studios will be available.

The computer labs for this paper are in S Block. The computers in the lab are equipped with the Macintosh operating system but students can work on their own laptops if they prefer. The programming environment will be Processing which can be downloaded from processing.org. Printing, email and web access is available but will be charged for through the Unicash charging system. Other software will be made available as necessary.

The labs are available to enrolled students outside of scheduled classes, Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm. A schedule of supervised and ‘free’ time will be posted on the lab doors. Prior to 8am and after 9pm and at weekends the student will need to use their ID card to gain access to the building and lab.

Attendance at half of the critiques are ‘compulsory assessment items’ within the paper (see the University Calendar 2016 - Assessment Regulations). Missing these components of the paper without an acceptable excuse will result in a failing grade. It is recommended that all other assessment items be attempted to allow a student to pass (50%).
