This paper offers a foundation for students learning to navigate and communicate effectively through digital learning environments. It incorporates purposeful selection of technologies for learning, and digital literacy which includes being able to research, create, evaluate and apply technical skills while doing so.

The paper is comprised of three modules. The module topics are:

Module One – Digital Proficiency

Module Two – Digital Literacy

Module Three – Digital Social Competence

The paper is taught online between Monday, 25 February and Friday, 31 May 2019.

Virtual meetings may be held in response to student need. The paper will be supported by regular voice-files and YouTube clips.

The teaching recess is from Monday, 15 April until Sunday, 28 April 2019.

Guidelines for Participating in Online Discussion Forums

A focus question relating to key learning in this paper will be posted weekly and it is required that you will engage actively and thoughtfully in these forums.

A minimum of two contributions distributed throughout the week per each discussion topic is required. Although there are not a prescribed maximum number of contributions, please be mindful that this is a conversation and allow others space to contribute.

These discussions will give you the opportunity to critically reflect and critique the topic questions and some of the key ideas from the literature.

They will also allow space for you to work, learn with, and from, other students.

Please note that your contribution to the online discussion forums is compulsory.

Although some discussions are not graded they are considered attendance.

Please note: If you are unable to participate in a discussion please contact the convenor so that an alternative can be arranged.

The Participation Marking Criteria for the discussions is detailed below.

  • A minimum of 2 contributions distributed throughout each week.
  • Postings are relevant to, and show understanding of the weekly topic.
  • Postings link theory and/or research, practice, and where relevant, personal experience.
  • Gives recognition to, extends on others contributions, and brings in new perspectives.

This paper has a credit value of 15 points. This paper at 100 level, is expected to take a total of 150 hours to complete. The time spent will include:

  • Participating regularly in discussion within the Moodle forum
  • Reading through the online modules, discussions and resources
  • Finding and reading related information
  • Thinking, reflecting, discussing
  • Preparing responses to questions in the modules
  • Seeking help from resources and others in the class
  • Improving ICT skills generally in order to become a more confident user of the technology
