This paper is a thematic survey of the history of design.

The paper explores the evolution and change in design thinking, technology and processes in aspects of design from typography to transport. The role of influence both inside design and from the wider society are considered in relation to how design has evolved over time, particularly through the industrial revolution to the beginning of the 21st century.

The development and spread of styles, and the relationship of design to the societies it served are considered. The emphasis of the course is on the formal & stylistic evolution of design as signifiers of meaning and how these ideas are expressed visually.

Workload

Each week students will spend two hours in the lecture, one hour in a lab and about 6-12 hours doing readings, completing the weekly quiz, preparing for labs and working on assignments. This equates to approximately 12 hours per week and a total of 150 hours over the semester.
