Using Project Based Learning, this paper will furnish the student with an understanding of the innovation and product development process. It will explain the different levels of innovation, innovation techniques, how to screen ideas, the types of Intellectual Property and how to write a basic Business Plan. For the product development part, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools; CAD, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), SolidWorks sustainability, 3D printing and SolidWorks mold design will be introduced and applied to the project. Each group will present their product idea, prototype and business model at an investor 'pitch'. Teaching is through keynote lectures and case studies in conjunction with PBL workshops. The paper aligns with ENZ Graduate Attributes 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 11.

This paper is taught through one keynote lecture, one case study lecture/tutorial and one PBL workshop session per week. Students work in groups of 4 to complete an holistic PBL assignment. The assignment enables students to apply ENGME580 material and that from other engineering papers to undertake 'realistic' product development.

The assessment of this paper will consider the following aspects:

Product Innovation and screening, Intellectual Property, and business plan. Product development; customer requirements, modelling, design, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools, mold design, costing, sustainability and rapid prototyping. The work produced in the assignments will be assessed through interview, technical report and 'investor pitch', including prototype demonstration.
