This paper introduces students to the rich field of social and cultural geography. Online learning and in person Labs contain contemporary human geography topics that link to the UNDP Sustainable Development Goals. We will focus on people, places, and processes and the ways in which geographical perspectives help to create transformative change and sustainable communities.

We draw on current research in social and cultural geography including, for example, connections, interrelations and movements of different people in a range of places and spaces. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between place and social identities (gender, race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, age, disability etc) and how understanding these helps further the UNDP Sustainable Development Goals.

Representations of people and places are considered by examining maps, music, video and other cultural texts. In introducing students to different perspectives in geography, students gain critical insights into the ways people and places can be described and understood.

The paper provides opportunity for individual initiative and is intended to be challenging, stimulating and enjoyable. While it forms a base for more specialised papers at second and third year levels, the paper also forms a coherent unit for students not planning to advance in geography.

This is a B trimester paper. The paper consists of:

  • Weekly online learning zoom sessions that combine content, discussions, group tasks, and assessment information (12 in total);
  • One weekly two-hour Lab (starting in week 3) which offers a combination of individual and group tasks, discussion, and assessment (8 in total).

During the online zoom sessions we will talk through content, discuss readings, and assessment. Sometimes guests will zoom in to talk to us.

We will also meet in-person each week for a two hour Lab, starting in week 3. There are 8 weeks of Labs. You can select your Lab time through our Moodle page. If you cannot physically come to the Labs, we will create a zoom link for you and assessment will be submitted via Moodle.

The online learning sessions and labs cover different material and all contribute to the content of the online Moodle quiz and test. The detailed schedule of dates, times, zooms and rooms for all classes and the topics for all classes is available later in this paper outline.

Read all assignment instructions carefully. Seek clarification if you are not sure what is expected.

In order to be eligible for top marks you need to:
• Communicate relevant ideas in written form;
• Devise a clear argument and focus;
• Demonstrate an ability to draw on published geographical literature;
• Provide an analysis of the ways in which your identity and public spaces affect each other;
• Demonstrate an ability to write clearly, proof-read work and present ‘clean’ copy, and follow protocols for referencing material (access the library subject portal for geography).

A grades (80% and over)
Excellent work. There is a clear focus on what the assignment should achieve, and it is structured accordingly. The assignment is well written and free of all but very trivial errors. There is clear evidence of a thoughtful and original approach. The student has developed opinions on the issues being considered, and can explain and support these opinions persuasively with evidence. The relevant literature and class material has been considered and integrated into the work, with appropriate referencing.

B grades (65 to 79%)
From a little below average (B), average (B), to somewhat above average (B+). Reasonably organised and written. The student has an understanding of the topic and has read enough to be familiar with the key material. There is some evidence that the student has understood ideas, concepts, can handle evidence, and can explain and present these adequately. But there are weaknesses either in essay organisation, use of evidence, or reference to the literature. Usually this means that the student could have done better with more time and effort.

C grades (50 to 64%)
Just adequate to adequate. The basic requirements of the assignment have been carried out but there are quite substantial gaps and weaknesses. The student has a very general understanding of the topic and has written the assignment so that it can be understood. Some use of relevant material is made. Reading has been adequate but may not have been sufficient to do justice to the topic.

D grades (40 to 49%)
The student has not done what was required for the assignment. The topic is not well understood, little reading has been done and often the assignment is poorly written.

E (under 40%)
Unacceptable work. Usually little or no understanding of the topic is demonstrated, and ideas are unstructured and badly expressed.

Students will sit a two-hour test. The test is worth 30% of the final grade.
