Ngā Māramatanga / Enduring Understandings

1. Kia tau ngā ariā o te akoranga reo hei reo tuarua ki te mahi ako me te mahi whakaako ki ngā whakatau me ngā mahi a te kaiwhakaako. Theories of second language learning and teaching can influence teacher decision-making and practice.

2. Ka pā te akoranga, te whakaakoranga me ngā aromatawaitanga o te reo ki ngā take whakahoahoa, ahurei me te rangahau reo. Issues associated with social, cultural and linguistic factors affect the learning, teaching and assessment of te reo Māori.

Te Pātai Matua / Essential Question

Me pēwhea rā te hononga o te whakahoahoa, ahurei me te rangahau reo ki te akoranga, te whakaakoranga me te aromatawaitanga o te reo? How do issues associated with social, cultural and linguistic factors affect the learning, teaching and assessment of te reo Māori?

Ka whānui te titiro o ngā ākonga ki ngā ariā, ki ngā take e pā ana ki te ako / whakaako rānei i te reo, hei reo tuarua, ki ngā mahi aromatawai i te reo me ngā whakahīrautanga ki te reo Māori. (To provide students with an overall understanding of theories and issues associated with second language learning, teaching and assessment and the application to te reo Māori.)

This paper is taught partially face-to-face and partially online between 25 February and 31 May 2019. The face-to-face sessions will be held from 9.00am-12.00 noon on 27 February, 6 March, 27 March, 1 May, 8 May, 22 May and 29 May.

The online sessions will be during the weeks of 13, 20 March, 3 and 10 April and 15 May.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • whakaaro huritaohia ngā wāhanga o ngā take-ā-iwi ki te ako, ki te whakaako i te reo Māori hei reo tuarua (to reflect on socio-cultural factors that impact on the learning and teaching of Māori as a second language.

  • toro atu ki ngā aupiki me ngā auhiki e ara mai ana i runga i ngā rerekētanga-ā-iwi, ngā rerekētanga whakahoahoa, me ngā rerekētanga-ā-reo (critique issues which evolve as a result of cultural, social and linguistic differences)

This paper has a credit value of 30 points. It is expected that you will complete a minimum of 300 hours of study to successfully obtain a passing grade for this paper. You will be expected to attend a minimum of 48 hours of scheduled on-campus and online tutorials and the remainder will be personal study and preparation time to complete assessment tasks and readings. In order to be eligible for a pass in this paper students are required to complete all four assessment tasks.
