What this paper is about
This paper is an intensive ‘catchup’ paper in basic algebraic concepts with a brief introduction to calculus and statistics. It is intended for those students who wish to improve their basic mathematical skills, either as a background for other subjects, or prior to enrolling in MATHS165 General Mathematics, MATHS166 Management Mathematics, STATS111 Statistics for Science, or STATS121 Introduction to Statistical Methods in a subsequent trimester or year.
NOTE: If you are studying MATHS168 as preparation for MATHS165 or MATHS166, you will need to have at least a B grade in order to gain admittance.
This paper attempts to cover the minimum background skills needed for such papers. These include all algebra skills from Year 9 to Year 12 Mathematics. It will include examples of the use of mathematics in a ‘realworld’ context.
This paper outline is accurate at time of writing. However, changes may occur as result of Government or University directives.
How this paper will be taught
Required Readings
There is no required textbook. However, students should read (possibly several times) relevant sections of the Lecture Notes as they become available on Moodle. Students are likely to also benefit from looking at one or two high school textbooks based on the curriculum for NCEA Level 1 and 2 Mathematics. These include Gamma Mathematics and Theta Mathematics by David Barton and published by Pearson Longman as well as the Year 11 and Year 12 Mathematics Workbooks by R. Lakeland and published by Nulake. Some of these books are available for borrowing at the Teaching Resources Library in TL Block.

Assessments
How you will be assessed
The internal assessment mark will consist of SIX assignments (worth a total of 20%) and SIX Tests (worth a total of 30%).
 Assignments:
The paper consists of six modules, each of which will take about two weeks. The content of each module is given in the "Topics" section of this paper outline. There is an assignment associated with each module resulting in a total of six assignments. Assignments are multichoice and online. They will be available in Moodle. More details about each assignment including due date to submit will be provided as each assignment becomes available.
 Tests:
There will be SIX tests held fortnightly in class in lecture time on Wednesdays.
Note 1: The tests are meant to be sat in person. Students with legitimate reasons why they cannot take the tests in person should email the Convenor as soon as possible to see what alternative arrangements can be made.
Note 2: Please ensure you have your ID card with you at all the tests.
Note 3: Your final overall mark will consist of 30% from tests plus 20% from assignments and 50% from the Final Examination. There is a requirement that you need to get an overall mark of at least 50% with at least 40% in the Final Examination to get an unrestricted pass. Students with less than 40% in the Final Examination, but an overall mark of at least 50% will usually obtain a RP (Restricted Pass).
Note 4: A Restricted pass (RP) will NOT be accepted as a prerequisite for entry into STATS111 or STATS121 while a minimum B grade is required for entry into MATHS165 or MATHS166.
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 50:50. The final exam makes up 50% of the overall mark.
